Safety and efficiency of peripherally inserted central catheters according to performance status

The purpose of this study was to identify safety and efficacy of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) in different performance status. There were total 599 cases of PICC insertion from January 2012 to August 2016 in a hospital. Among 599 cases, 40 pediatric cases were excluded and 559 cases were analysed. Data including PICC related complications, catheter days, patients’ performance status at the time of PICC insertion, and information regarding PICC operation was extracted from electronic medical records. In results, reasons for insertion were mostly poor peripheral vein in 507 cases (90.7%). The most frequent reasons to PICC removal were patients’ death in 305 cases (54.6%). And the incident rate of complication related to PICC was 1.4%, Performance status was significantly related to catheter days (p < .001) and reason to removal (p < .001). This study showed that the PICC inserted by nurse specialists has been used safely and effectively. And it is suggested that PICC should be considered earlier than patient’s performance status deteriorates.
