- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to understand the relationships among general hospital nurses’perceptions and empathy toward the elderly and their geriatric nursing performance and to investigate and reveal the factors affecting geriatric nursing performance. The subjects of this study were nurses working at general hospitals who attended elderly patients over 65 years of age and who had more than three months of clinical experience. Perception of the elderly and empathy showed a positive correlation and empathy and geriatric nursing performance also showed a positive correlation. The factors affecting geriatric nursing performance were empathy, the size of the hospital at which the nurse worked, and gender, and the total explanatory power of these variables was 39%. Thus, to enhance the geriatric nursing performance of general hospital nurses, it is necessary to enhance their empathy by a program.
